MLS NEXT, ECNL, and ECNL RL competition structure

The same club can field teams in more than one competition under different names, schedules, and rules. Confirm the competition before you compare a record or share standings.

MLS NEXT, ECNL, and ECNL Regional League (ECNL RL) run separate competitions. A familiar club name does not tell you which schedule or standings standings belongs to that team. Start with the competition

Open the league page, then the age group, then the named conference. That keeps the standings standings attached to the matches that produced it. If you search for a club first, use the team page's conference link to confirm the competition instead of guessing from a region name.

A conference called Midwest, Southwest, or Mid-Atlantic in one league is not the same competition as a similarly named conference in another. Teams, schedules, rules, and public sources differ. Keep the league name in view before comparing records or planning a trip.

MLS NEXT Academy and Homegrown

LeagueTables publishes MLS NEXT Academy Division and Homegrown Division as separate competition views. Clubs and U-style age labels can look familiar across both, but the schedules and standings stay separate. For 2026-27 those divisions also use different age calendars; that detail belongs on the age groups guide.

ECNL

ECNL runs separate boys and girls programs, each with its own league, age-group, and conference pages. Current public pages use U-style age labels; older seasons in the archive still use birth-year labels. Conference matches are only one part of a team's season. Events and postseason can matter a lot without belonging to the same conference standings.

ECNL RL

ECNL RL is its own boys and girls competition, with its own regional structures, schedules, and postseason pathway. It is not a column inside an ECNL standings standings. A club can play ECNL, ECNL RL, or both through different teams. Conference names and membership can change by season; LeagueTables keeps the current public labels.

Why event matches and conference standings differ

Conference play, showcase weekends, national events, playoffs, and finals can sit in separate pieces of a season. The same team may play an event outside its normal conference schedule. That is why a club's full match count on social media or in a league app can be larger than the matches that feed one conference standings.

LeagueTables shows the public match set tied to the page you opened and builds the standings from those completed results. For qualification, event selection, tiebreakers, or schedule changes, use the league's current rules.

  1. Confirm the competition: MLS NEXT Academy, MLS NEXT Homegrown, ECNL, or ECNL RL.
  2. Confirm boys or girls where it applies, then the age-group label for that season.
  3. Confirm the conference before reading the standings or comparing a score.
  4. Check the league or club when an event, eligibility rule, venue, or advancement decision matters.
